-Cross-border platform for energy efficient power electronics
Electrification of energy systems – a step towards sustainability Electrification is an important and necessary element in the sustainable development, handling the global climate and environmental challenges. However, electrification requires application of energy efficient power electronics, which is a cross-cutting technology applied for efficient control and conversion of electric power.
Power electronics components and systems are used in a large number of applications within electronic equipment, home appliances, lighting and HVAC systems for buildings, electro-mobility, industrial production, and renewable energy generation.
A strong Northern power electronics region Industry in the Danish-German border region has strong market positions in several power electronics related value chains. Thus, companies can contribute to development of new eco-friendly and eco-innovative solutions to optimise and reduce energy consumption. However, new knowledge and a stronger and institutionalised cross-border innovation platform is required to maintain development activities and to integrate the Northern power electronics ecosystem. Most efficiently the challenges are dealt with in a common cross-border effort, since critical mass and innovation synergies can best be attained on an interregional scale. Furthermore, the opportunity can be exploited for an integration towards a Northern centre for power electronics. The project target of PE-Region Platform is to support sustainable development through new green products and solutions within energy efficient power electronics. Thus, the project contributes to maintaining and supporting the position of strength of the Danish-German cross-border region in this field. The project objective is power electronics research and development as well as establishment of a lasting innovation platform. The objectives are:
- PE-Region innovation platform: Establishment of a cross-border innovation platform for the regional power electronics ecosystem, including networking and new innovation initiatives.
- Application oriented scientific research: Generation of new knowledge on energy efficient power conversion and intelligent control, as well as optimized components and systems.
- Demonstration: Development, in interaction between academic partners and industrial network partners, of a power electronics key technology demonstrator platform for new green products, which provides higher power density as well as a better control and integration to the electrical grids.
